She Laid Him in a Manger

No royal bed
No tapestried crib
But a manger
One of those rough wooden things
Cattle eat from
A straw bed
With stable smells.

This was not what Mary had in mind
Nor Joseph
Who with carpenter skills had no doubt
Carefully fitted tongue and groove
Shaved the wood with tender
satisfaction
While Mary lined and dressed
And dreamed over it -
A proper cradle for a King.

But now it sits in far off Nazareth
In a cold and empty place
While weary parents soon-to-be
Seek a resting place in Bethlehem.

“And she brought forth
Her first born son
And laid him in a manger.”

Life’s disappointments keenly felt
The hurts and losses dealt
Separation from our hopes and dreams
Are never far from where God comes
To break the bonds of our despair
The manger is the sign
God’s peace is near.
The lowly
Humble
Ordinary
Is that which holds
The loveliest of gifts
The promise of the power
That brings all greatness to its source
And humanity its hope.

She laid him in a manger.
